(St. Charles, MO) — January 13, 2012 — Fight Me MMA drew another scary-large crowd with its Friday the 13th night of professional mixed martial arts in St. Charles. The promotion, along with the help of plenty of free tickets and their title sponsor the Missouri National Guard, had the Family Arena swollen to capacity. They continued smashing Missouri attendance records building on the success from their last event on Veteran’s Day. Along with a guest appearance by horror film legend Kane Hodder, who played Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th movie series, the performances inside the cage were frightfully good.

Jake Collier and Kelvin Tiller battled in a rematch in the main event. Collier, a top-flight prospect based out of Cuba, Mo., defeated Tiller almost a year ago as amateurs. Collier secured a takedown early, and both fighters displayed an excellent ground game. Collier nearly pulled off a Kimura midway through the round, but Tiller eventually lured Collier into a triangle, and Collier was forced to tap with just 18 seconds left in the first round.

In the night’s first co-main event, Rashid “The Black Spartan” Abdullah faced Aussie Benny Alloway. Abdullah controlled the action on the ground for most of the first round, but Alloway remained patient and waited for his opportunity to finish. It came early in the second round when Alloway caught Abdullah in an arm bar and won by submission with 4:18 left. Tempers flared post-fight as Alloway accused Abdullah of biting and fighters and coaches had to be separated.

The first women’s MMA bout in Fight Me history was one of the best and most talked about matches of the night. Californian Team Quest member Michelle Ould faced Regina Gallea from Montana. Ould started the fight with a sharp head kick and takedown of Gallea. Ould continued with ground and pound, but Gallea proved resilient. Gallea eventually worked for a leg triangle and had Ould in a little bit of trouble. After a suspect referee stand-up in which both fighters were working hard, This time it was Gallea who took Ould down, but using a quick sprawl, Ould managed to secure an arm bar for the victory at 2:19.

Lucas Gwaltney pulled off an impressive first-round victory over Dustin Center. To start the round, Gwaltney slipped while attempting a front kick, and Ace, an excellent grappler, jumped into his guard. Once back on their feet, Gwaltney delivered a vicious body kick, but Center shook it off and was able to secure a takedown and eventually work in a guillotine with little over a minute left. Gwaltney popped his head free and peppered shots into Ace’s midsection to secure the first-round victory.

Florida-based fighter Mike King continued his dominance at 205 pounds. After getting dropped by an elbow from Louis DeWerdt early in the fight, King was able to recover, winning via vicious ground and pound. King’s elbows on the ground are scarier than Jason Voohrees in a hockey mask.

Nick LoBosco won a hard-fought, fight-of-the-night candidate, with a split decision win over Corey Ace. Both fighters picked their spots waiting for heavy handed counters. A back and forth battle, highlighted by a flying knee from LoBosco, ended the first round. Fighters exchanged blows in the second. The round was highlighted by a flurry of punches after a takedown by Ace. The third and deciding round started with LoBosco stalking Ace with a renewed vigor. Repeated leg strikes slowed and stumbled Ace, earning LoBosco the victory.

CMMA Fighting System’s Sal Woods looked impressive and back on track with this win over TJ Thomas. Woods started the first round with a nice takedown and worked from the dominant position. After a quick scramble, the fighters returned to their feet and Woods connected with a thunderous knee sending Thomas to the mat. “It must be what hitting a home run feels like,” Woods said. With 2:13 left in the first round, Woods finished the fight with a barrage of punches.

In amateur action:

Ross Cooper was able to pick up a victory over Sgt. Jeremy Koerper of the Missouri National Guard. Cooper locked on a submission in the closing minutes of the third round after both fighters battled to a stalemate in the first two.

Mike Green stepped into the cage at a moment’s notice, as a last-minute replacement for Josh Crouch. “I got the call at 11 a.m., today,” Green said. He took on Army Combatants instructor Jason Powell, who got a hard fought TKO victory in the third. Powell finished the fight from the mount position and rained down punches with 1:20 left in the third round. “I was a little disappointed with the stoppage,” Green said. “He wasn’t dropping bombs or smashing my nose, but it was fair.”

Green is a 10-year fight veteran with over 50 amateur bouts under his belt. “I’ve been helping some guys train for an upcoming show,” Green said. “Luckily I was ready right away. I watched some tape on him. He wanted no part of my stand up.”

In the night’s first fight, Richie Fernow was able to pull off a split decision victory over AJ Siscoe. “I knew he has good ground game but I didn’t realize how strong he was,” Fernow said. Siscoe was more aggressive in the opening round and made a nice submission attempt from his back to close out round one. Siscoe gained control in the second round with a takedown and maintained dominant position. In the third round, Fernow protected himself from takedowns by peppering shots to Siscoe. “I was able to pick him apart,” Fernow said. “He couldn’t tag me.” The 28-year-old Fernow trains out of Berger MMA in Valley Park. He is 4-1 as an amateur.

During their most recent visit to the Family Arena, Fight Me reset its own attendance record by playing to a standing-room-only crowd. “Fight Me MMA has established itself as one of the top MMA organizations in the Country and we are thrilled they are launching their 2012 tour with us,” said Family Arena Building Director Mark Reifsteck. “I can’t think of a better way to bring in the New Year than to treat our fans to one of the most popular shows we have ever hosted at the Family Arena.”

The official fight card will be announced in the coming days and will feature several local MMA stars including Zach Freeman, Terrell Brown, Sal Woods, Louis DeWerdt, Josh Sampo, TJ Thomas, Tex Trismegistus and one of the most popular fighters in Fight Me MMA Rashid “The Black Spartan” Abdullah who trains at the Fight ME MMA Academy of Courage in Lake St. Louis.

Fight week festivities will start with official weigh-ins on Thursday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Quintessential located at 149 North Main Street in historic downtown St. Charles and will be open to the public. A standing-room-only crowd enjoys the action at the Family Arena.

(St. Charles, MO) — November 11, 2011 —It was a historic night in Missouri mixed martial arts Friday, at the Family Arena. A reported attendance of over 12,000 set the mark for the largest attended mixed martial arts event ever in Missouri as Fight Me MMA hosted its Veteran’s Day Battle. Fight fans were treated to ten quality scraps and a first-rate production. However, the theme of the night, undoubtedly, was honoring the veterans. After a video tribute to all of those who served in the armed forces and a haunting ten-bell salute to the fallen warriors, two amateur bouts kicked off the night, and three main event bouts closed the show.

The first fight of the night pitted Brandon Knight versus Jason Powell at 145-pounds. Powell was representing the Missouri National Guard combatives unit, and had several fans in attendance. Unfortunately, it was Knight’s night as he got the best of Powell with a guillotine choke at 28 seconds into round one.

Fight number two also featured a member of the combatives unit, but this time the results were different. Jeremy Keorper took out Bob Loveless also with a choke at 24 seconds into the first round at 185-pounds. Keorper made the record 1-1 for the Missouri National Guard and subsequently ended the amateur portion of the card.

In fight three, Zach “The Altar Boy” Freeman, from St. Charles MMA, was able to stop Darius “The Wildman” Yancy at 165 with a triangle choke after a brutal first round, securing the victory. There was plenty of hoop-la surrounding Freeman going into this fight as a top-flight prospect and he lived up to every bit of the hype.

The fourth fight of the night was by the the bloodiest. ATT Evolution-trained Nick Lobosco was able to stop challenger Yohance Flager by arm triangle midway through round one of this featherweight contest.

After a brief intermission, Fight Me MMA delivered a super-fight between hometown favorite Justin “The American Kid” Lawrence and Anthony “Superman” Jones at 155. Lawrence, a Pacific native, is a member of world renown Black House MMA stable and must have been packing kryptonite as he secured an arm-bar victory halfway through the first round. After the win Lawrence told the crowd about his plan to try out for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter in December. Lawrence paid his own tribute to the vets as he proudly waved the American flag before and after his fight and also got the crowd involved in a “USA” chant.

In a fight that could have easily been the main event, Rashid “The Black Spartan” Abdullah (170) took on very popular CMMA fighter, Sal Woods. The Spartan was able to win by rear naked choke, but not after a 5- minute plus delay resulting from two separate low blows he had delivered. With some controversy surrounding this win, and seeing an opportunity to put it to rest, Fight ME MMA announced an immediate rematch to take place at the upcoming January 13th show that drew a tremendous cheer from the audience.

St. Charles MMA’s second fighter on the card, Alp Ozkilic outlasted Damian Jeffro in a very technical match. Ozkilic (135) used his superior wrestling to control most of the fight, and was able to score enough offense in each round to win the judges’ favor. Ozkilic won with unanimous decision win that saw all three judges scoring the match 30-27.

The first main event featured light heavyweights Colby Tierney taking on Mike King at 205. Tierney, of Sullivan, took a tremendous amount of punishment before King was able to finally put him away with a kimura in round two. Tierney showed a incredible heart in this match, and we will no doubt see him back in Fight Me MMA. King looked impressive, and at times unstoppable.

In the second main event the heavyweights took to the cage. Tex “T-Wreck” Trismegistus (220) won two minutes into the first round after Fiore MMA’s Eddy “The Smashing Machine” Smith dislocated his knee robbing fans of what easily could have been the fight of the night. Smith dominated early, but had to quickly stop the fight when his knee gave way.

The last fight on the card also produced the biggest upset. Scrappy, Ray “The Gator” Grindstaff (135) took on “The Professor” JW Wright, a jiu-jitsu wizard. The first round was fairly close with both fighters getting a few shots in. The second round started with a superman punch from Wright which was quickly dodged and countered by Grindstaff dropping his opponent. The “Gator” sensing victory jumped on his opponent and quickly got the TKO victory causing the crowd to erupt. In one of the best scenes of the night, Grindstaff was swarmed by fans and friends afterwards and was stopped for dozens of photos and autographs.

(St. Charles, MO) — August 13, 2011 — What started out as a night filled with hype and anticipation lived up to its billing as Abel “Pain” Trujillo defeated Lucas “2 Strong” Gwaltney during an all-out, three round war in the main event of the evening. From the opening bell, the two traded vicious blow after vicious blow creating a deafening roar from an enthusiastic fight crowd who stood for the entire battle.

Perhaps the most exciting moment of the fight however, came at the end of round two when Gwaltney locked in a guillotine choke with Trujillo up against the cage which would later prompt Trujillo’s coach Michael Nowling to proclaim, “Wow, that choke was deep! Nine out of ten guys tap right there. Abel is one of a kind.” The crowd, largely in favor of Trujillo who trains at the Fight Me MMA Academy of Courage in nearby Lake St. Louis, grew so loud that no one heard the bell ring.

When veteran referee Mike England stepped in, it appeared that he may have stopped the fight even though Trujillo never tapped. In all actuality, he was just separating the two warriors because the round had ended.

Then, as if the fight couldn’t be more dramatic, Gwaltney and Trujillo spent the majority of the third and final round standing toe-to-toe trading shots, much to the delight of the capacity crowd. The epic contest culminated with all three judges cage side scoring the contest 30-27 for a unanimous decision victory in favor of Trujillo. “Lucas is the toughest guy that I have ever fought,” said an elated Trujillo. “No matter how hard I hit him, he never stopped coming forward.” Gwaltney had similar praise for his opponent, “What a fight,” he said. “Abel hit me as hard as I have ever been hit. I have never fought anyone who hit that hard, especially at the end of the fight. He was in great shape and it showed. Thank God for giving me the strength and courage to finish the fight.”

The Hollywood script would not end there, as moments after Fight Me MMA cage announcer Tony Biondo read the judge’s decision and England raised Trujillo’s hand in victory, Gwaltney got down on one knee and ask longtime girlfriend Jenny Duffield to marry him. She said yes, putting a perfect end to an incredible night of MMA action!
